Therefore, it's essential that you make sure what's included before you purchase any given package.

Q. How can you can get to Schefferville ?
A. As a means of transportation, air travel is both quick and reliable, which is why most clients travel this way. However, you can also travel to Sept-Îles by car, and from there take the train to Schefferville. (There is a weekly train service between the two cities.)
Q. Can I go fishing when I'm through hunting?
A. Although caribou hunting is our main specialty, we also offer our clients the opportunity to fish in virgin waters. Whether fly fishing, lake fishing, wading or canoe fishing, you can pit yourself against numerous species, including lake trout, Arctic char, speckled trout, northern pike, landlocked salmon, Atlantic salmon, and native brook trout.

So as to preserve the high quality of fishing in northern Quebec, most outfitters require their clients to release the fish they catch. However, it goes without saying you can savour your catches on the spot.
Q. Apart from caribou, can I hunt other species of game during my trip?
A. Many avid caribou hunters like to hunt black bear as well. Given their high numbers throughout the territory, this can prove to be a very enjoyable experience for anyone looking to round out an already successful hunting trip.

What's more, the territories of Schefferville outfitters include a wide range of waterfowl, such as grouse, duck and geese. Note that Schefferville outfitters have all the necessary hunting and fishing permits.
Q. What types of plans do you offer?
A. Our outfitters offer several types of plans. Here are the main ones:
  • European Plan: This plan generally provides the equipment you need for meals and accommodation, as well as boats, motorboats and fuel. You must bring your own food and hunting gear. A camp attendant will be on hand to assist you in your expeditions and to ensure safety. All camps have standard communications equipment.
  • American Plan: This plan provides meals, bedding and whatever else you might need during your stay. Everything is included: guide (for two or four hunters), cook, meals, evisceration of game, etc. This plan is generally a little more expensive and is suitable for first-time clients.
  • Trophy hunting: The outfitter takes exceptional measures to allow you to collect a rewarding trophy.
  • Guide/hunter ratio: Each outfitter provides you with a guide. You may, however, choose to have one guide for two or more hunters. Rates vary according to the number of hired guides.

Note: Prices vary according to the type of package selected. We recommend that you firmly establish the terms and conditions of your stay with your outfitter.

Q. Once the caribou has been downed, how do I transport the venison?
A. Each Schefferville outfitter provides a special box to transport your game—just another example of their professionalism.Upon return to Montreal, clients can have their meat processed at an experienced butcher. All butchery services are supervised by VNQ (additional costs apply).
Q. Can I bring back the caribou antlers? What about the second caribou?
A. Packages generally include transportation of the caribou antlers. (Additional charges apply to the transportation of a second set of antlers.) To avoid any surprises, make sure to contact your outfitter for any questions you may have in this regard.
Q. What temperatures can I expect in this area?
A. In the fall, hunters enjoy milder temperatures ranging from 0°C to 7°C (in winter, the barometer can drop to as much as 35°C below zero).
Q. Should I carry cash or traveller's cheques?
A. Both are accepted. Schefferville outfitters urge their clients not to use personal cheques or credit cards, however.
Q. How much does a caribou hunting trip cost?
A. A well-organized caribou hunting trip to a wilderness area in northern Quebec, where the success rate is 95%, generally costs between CDN$3,000 and CDN$6,000. Rates vary according to the trip's duration, the type of accommodation, the plan selected, and the services provided.
